Strengthen your weak links with supply chain optimization

Have you identified a weak spot in your organisation?

Have your process(es) analysed, optimised and embedded

For your products or services to reach your customers, your organisation follows a series of se-quential processes every single day: the supply chain. One process may be smooth and effective whereas another may be rigid and inefficient, caused by a lack of knowledge, logic or structure. Your supply chain is only as strong as your weakest link. If this link breaks, this will disrupt the entire chain and therefore the services to your customers.

Supply chain optimization: applicable to every type of process

As an independent supply chain professional, I analyse, design and improve operational, logistical, financial, service, management and ICT processes. I strengthen the weak chains in the entire supply chain, irrespective of the nature and size of your organisation. I am hands-on, purposeful and have a genuine interest in people.

Every organisation benefits from supply chain improvement

After 35 years of supply chain management, my conclusion is that every organisation benefits from supply chain improvement. There are always supply chain activities that can and have to be done better and faster. After all, better service and time and cost savings are needed to strengthen your market position and to retain and expand your customer base.

"For a supply chain issue we choose Eric Hopstaken of ESCEPE, for his personal approach, experience and competences. Both educational and business-oriented we gladly use his knowledge and years of experience. We are also very content with the minor about supply chain management, which Eric developed in collaboration with Samsung for the NHTV.”

You have noticed that one or more processes is/are inefficient and although you grasp the urgency of the matter, you don't have the time, knowledge or manpower to get to the bottom of the problem and tackle it. You need a fresh pair of eyes from outside the company and additional brainpower. I will analyse your process, discover bottlenecks and causes and provide advice which is practical, unbiased and appropriate for your organisation, strategy and the market in which you operate.

Will you follow my supply chain advice? If so, I would be happy to implement the process improvements on your behalf: on time and within budget. Such as designing a new process, managing the construction of a new building, or overseeing a tender process. However, there is only a small chance of succeeding if people are unable to adapt to the modified processes or if they refuse to cooperate. This is why I also focus on motivating employees and teams.

For successful optimisation of supply chain processes, a change in the knowledge, attitude or be-haviour of those involved in the processes is required; this improves the knowledge of the supply chain or embeds the process improvement This is why I develop and deliver workshops, training courses and education in supply chain, project and change management. I can do this either on-site or at the international Supply Chain Academy.

About Escepe

Are specific processes within your organisation not running smoothly, whilst customers are demanding more and more from you? You will avoid complaints and the loss of customers by ensuring that careful thought has been given to every process step in your supply chain. You are only able to offer a good product or valuable service if your supply chain is functioning perfectly: produced quickly, the product is perfect and delivered on time, with minimal costs, risks and effort. As a supply chain advisor, project manager and coach, I can help you to create an efficient supply chain.

Focus on both processes and people

For a more efficient supply chain, you need better processes and prochange people. The human aspect is often neglected during process changes, but I believe that people hold the key to success and this is why I focus heavily on connecting and motivating people. For example, by being aware of their talents, forming strong teams based on that talent and then encouraging them to perform better still. Or by sharing with them knowledge about project, change and supply chain management through training courses, workshops and programmes.

At home in every sector and organisation

In 1983, I took my first step onto the supply chain ladder. More than 35 years later, I have experienced every link in the supply chain. I have managed small, local projects and integrated supply chain optimisations on behalf of multinationals, such as Cargill and GE Plastics. This experience is evident in the way in which I easily identify with situations. I am able to communicate effortlessly with people from all layers of an organisation - from the shop floor to the management. I am also able to quickly make links between what I see, hear and experience. Industry or service provision? SME or multinational? I feel at home anywhere.

I roll up my sleeves and set to work

I enjoy an informal working atmosphere, being on familiar terms and walking around in jeans. If this isn't suitable for your organisation, I would easily adapt. I am a level-headed person and I like to cut to the chase. I am someone who says exactly what needs to be said, but in an appropriate manner. In my role as advisor, project manager and coach, I like to roll up my sleeves and set to work both proactively and purposefully. You won't receive a thick theoretical report from me, but practical advice based on your data and my experiences from investigations I perform. I am only able to see whether the current driving routes and load schedules are optimal if I sit on the forklift truck myself.

A glimpse into my personal life

There is one major similarity between my work and my private life: connection. In 2004, I founded the 'Roosendaal Sings Foundation' with a friend and I organise a sing-along event three times a year; 5,000 people singing together in a square fosters a great sense of community. Music from the 1960s to the 1980s is my favourite: the Beatles, Golden Earring and Genesis, except when we are celebrating the carnival season in the Netherlands, then along with others from 'Tullepetaonestad' (the name given to Roosendaal during the Dutch carnival season), I sing along wholeheartedly with the Jan Snel Kapel and Staopelgekke Vrouwkes 'musicians'. I also enjoy travelling, camping and reading, particularly crime novels and professional literature.

Every organisation will benefit from the optimisation of its supply chain

Cases and customer experiences

35% savings on printed matter for the transport sector

Koninklijke Drukkerij Em. de Jong B.V. is the second largest printing group in the Benelux region. Every day, 30 trailers full of paper arrive at the firm and an equal number of full trailers leave.

The question was:

""Our transport costs are high; we do not feel we are getting the most out of our transport process. Could you examine and optimise this portion of our supply chain, the objective being to reduce the transport costs?"

De Jong contracts out 90% of its transport to third parties; this was 'dedicated transport', meaning the trucks were used exclusively by De Jong. The disadvantage of this were high costs and many empty truck kilometres being driven. After analysing the figures, I ascertained that De Jong would be able to save up to 35% on transport costs. I advised that a closed tender process be performed, to achieve this saving.

Project management of a repackaging process

As an all-round logistics service provider, Meeus based in Bergen op Zoom is involved with value added services, such as repackaging bulk raw materials into big bags, bags and boxes, and vice ver-sa.

After I had advised Meeus about more efficient organisation of the repackaging process, the ques-tion asked was:

"Could you project manage the construction of the new repackaging building?"

Meeus decided to outsource the management of the entire project: construction, fitting out, pro-cesses and personnel. As well as managing the design and construction phase, I selected suppliers and carried out negotiations regarding the procurement of machines. I designed and set up pro-cesses and linked these to the existing ICT systems. In respect of HRM, I was responsible for over-seeing the recruitment and training of operators.

Development of an implementation plan for sales and operations planning (S&OP)

KPMG is an international accounting and consulting firm. During audits, KPMG noticed that many multinationals are preoccupied with tomorrow, instead of looking at long-term forecasting. KPMG decided to expand the services its offers.

KPMG_Logo200x100px

The question was:

"We want to offer S&OP to our multinational customers. Could you help us to write a strategic im-plementation plan?"

During the three workshops, we drew up the strategic implementation plan for S&OP: an effective instrument for multinationals, to ensure an improved balance between supply and demand, strat-egy and operations, the objective being to improve the estimates of the financial results over a minimum period of 2 years and influence these results. The key to S&OP is continually thinking ahead, systematically gathering market information and analysing the impact on procurement, sales and logistics every month.

Development of the supply chain academic minor at NHTV International university of applied sci-ences in Breda

The NHTV university of applied sciences in Breda is continually developing new, modern course materials, based on real-life cases. Very close involvement in the business community enables the NHTV to improve the alignment of education with the required skills and competencies in the rap-idly changing supply chain sector.

NHTV_Logo200x100px

The question was:

“Could you develop an academic minor for us in supply chain management?"

Along with the NHTV and Samsung SDS Europe Logistics, I developed a practice-oriented supply chain minor. Seventy year four Logistics students will be working as consultants during this new course. They will advise Samsung's Consumer Electronics team about the design and implementa-tion of a virtual supply chain, which is better aligned to the customers' wishes, more effective than the current supply chain and which can meet the anticipated growth in goods such as TVs.
